Hi everyone, this is the 3rd post of DIY Website Design with WordPress.

The main content will be a guide to using wordpress for newcomers after installing the website on hosting.

Let’s get It Started! When installing, I instructed you to set the website language to Vietnamese, so all the words in the control page will be written in Vietnamese ^^

You can go to Settings > Reading > Interface > Vietnamese to change the language back.

How to login to wordpress

As shared in post #2, the path to login to wordpress is the www. domain.vn/admin

When entered, the website will change to /wp-admin, but don’t worry, both of these links point to the Dashboard of WordPress.

About wordpress dashboard

The dashboard of WP is the place for you to manipulate the customizations and settings of the website.

Only administrators can use the full functionality to customize (I will talk about it in detail in the Members section).

When you have just installed your wordpress website, you will see the following settings:

  • News Feed: (In here, there will be 2 parts: Home page to return to the control page, and Update for you to keep track of the latest updates on the interface as well as installed plugins)
  • Posts: (Where to store, add, edit, delete… and everything about your posts)
  • Pages: (This is the place to edit everything about pages, I’ll tell the difference between pages and posts below)
  • Pages: (This is the place to edit everything about pages, I’ll tell the difference between pages and posts below)
  • Feedback: (Comment settings, comments on the website)
  • Interface: (Remember it, in post number 2 we met to install the website interface)
  • Plugin: (This is a wide section, so I will guide in the next article, it is the extension of the website)
  • Members: (Setting everything about members, permissions and users)
  • Tools: (Install basic tools in the website system)
  • Installation: (Basic settings and also used to install downloaded Plugins)

You already know the basics of the control panel.

Next, I will dive into the most important items to pay attention to & need to use the most!

Stop for a moment!

The parts that do not use much or do not have many features will be temporarily ignored!

Follow the article menu column on the left for your convenience! In the Main Content column, when you click on any item, you will automatically be taken to the content in it.

Section 1: Articles

This is the section for you to use to add, edit, delete and customize posts.

  • All articles: This will give you an overview of all the articles you have
  • Write a new post: You already guessed it :)) It’s to create a new post
  • Category: This is the place to create categories, for example, when you make a personal blog about health, there will be many different categories such as: How to eat, exercise, improve sleep… Next There you can add related articles to its correct category.
  • Tags: This is the place to control the tag (hashtag) of the article, like the statuses on Facebook, people often have hashtags in the article like #health #knowledge.

Post a new post

Click on write new post and you will be taken to WP’s writing interface.

This interface is very easy to use, it is almost like the Word software we often use. However, the latest current version of WP has updated the article writing interface, which, in my opinion, is quite difficult to use.

With the vast majority of other wp users having the same opinion, we need to install an extension plugin to return the article interface to the old versions.

If you haven’t downloaded the Classic Editor plugin that I mentioned in post #2, then click on Plugins > Install new plugin > Once on you will see the Classic Editor plugin > Click install & activate

Here are the basics:

  • Title, description
  • Posting, saving articles
  • Add to category and select profile picture

Watch the short video below to get an idea of how the article will be displayed.

Create an article category

The article category, you should create according to the content you are about to write.

According to the interface of the coffee demo web, I will create a list as follows:

  • Instructions for making coffee
  • Types of coffee beans
  • Good coffee place

After entering the name, click Add category to create it.

Section 2: Page

Pages differ from posts in that Pages are more customizable and designed to be more diverse, and also more functional than Article writing.

Pages are often used to interface pages on websites such as Home page, Product page, Landing page…

To customize the interface of a page, I will leave it in Lesson 5: UX Builder wordpress and 3 steps to change the homepage interface

Section 3: Interface

In addition to the main purpose of installing and editing the interface, in this interface section, there are many other items such as Customize, Widget, Menu.

The 3 small items I just mentioned are very important to customize the look and feel of a website

I will also guide in detail in another post, which is Lesson 7: Using Customize to customize Header, Footer & Style wordpress

Section 4: Members

The function of this section is simply to create and edit the information and rights of members on the website.

Note: When creating access rights for members, the password should not be too easy such as :123456 or A2020…

There are many cases where the website has been hacked because the password is too weak

A good password should contain 1 special character like # or @, uppercase, lowercase and number.

Section 5: Tools

This part is not very important, can be used to import and export website information, but you also rarely use it.

A very small number of plugins may later need to be installed through this section.

Section 6: Settings

This section should note the Writing and Reading section, the rest later when you install the plugin, you will mainly go to this section to customize the plugin.

In the tutorials on customizing the interface on the page, I will guide you more carefully.

Stay tuned for the next post to learn how to customize the look and feel of your Page to make your website more beautiful and professional.
